Munnar – Feel the Heaven
The word “Heaven” is not enough to say about Munnar. Munnar is one of the most popular and beautiful hill stations in South India. It is nestled in Western Ghats at an altitude of 6000 ft and is located in Idukki district of Kerala. 1. Mattupetty Dam and Dairy Farm
Mattupetty dam and lake lies 13 km away from Munnar, is a popular picnic spot in Idukki District. It offers a panoramic view of wooden hills and tea plantations. The concrete reservoir is a treat to the eyes for its serene nature and offers many fascinating sights to relish. The place is ideal for trekking and is habitat for a variety of birds. Boating facilities are allowed in the lake, which allows tourists to view the pretty natural surroundings closer. Speed launch, slow speedboat and motorboats are available here. Of all the main attractions at Mattupetty is the dairy farm, run by the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project. The dairy farm is a unique one of its kind with 100 varieties of high-yielding cattle. 2. Kundala Lake
Kundala is a picturesque town on the way to Top Station in Munnar. It is about 20 km from Munnar. Kundala Dam is considered as Asia’s first Arch Dam. The sprawling Kundala Tea Plantations and the Kundala Lake are the main attractions here. The Golf Course which belongs to Tata Tea Ltd. is located here. 3. Top Station
Top Station is situated about 1700 m above sea level at about 41 km from Munnar town. Top Station offers a panoramic view of the majestic Western Ghats and the valley of Theni district. The Shola forests, rolling grasslands, valleys, water bodies, tea, coffee and spice plantations when viewed from this location gives us a breath-taking experience. A large number of rare varieties of Nilgiri Tahrs are found in Rajamalai. There are about 1317 Nilgiri Tahr in this place. Apart from that the other attraction of this place is Kurinji flower, Eravikulam forest, Eravikulamwildlife sanctuary, Kuthumkal Waterfalls and Nyayamakad Waterfalls. You can also enjoy in this place by doing trekking, mountaineering, climbing etc. October to March is the best time to visit Rajamalai.
6. Tata Tea Museum
Tata Tea Museum is a popular tourist spot situated in Munnar of Kerala State. It is situated at a distance of about 12 km from Munnar town at the Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea. The history of Munnar is connected to Tea plantations for over a century.
Most of the people in Munnar are employed at tea plantations. Adjacent to the museum is the tea processing unit. With permission, you can visit the Tata Tea factory as well. You can see the tea pickers busy with their job of picking up the tea leaves and can meet a few of them on your way. In order to familiarize the visitors of the local customs and history, the museum has also arrangements for mesmerizing video screenings.
7. Marayoor Sandalwood Forests
Marayoor Sandalwood Forest is located at approximately 40 kilometers from Munnar. It is a small village which is situated in eastern side of the Western Ghats. It is the only ideal place in Kerala, which is favorable for the natural growth of sandalwood trees and apart from this it is a great place for relaxing and trekking. Many tourists visit this excellent place. On the way to Marayoor, you can see many natural features which include flowers, scenic beauty and a lot more. As you get closer, the trees appear one by one and then it turns into large groups of sandal wood trees. The atmosphere in this area is very cool, thus all visitors love this place a lot.
8. Attukad Waterfalls
A panoramic view of waterfalls and rolling hills, Attukkad, located between 9 km from Munnar and Pallivasal, is a feast for the eyes. The place is also ideal for long treks. Blossom International Park is located at 3 km away from Munnar on the way to Cochin. The park is on the banks of river Muthirapuzha and the misty hill tea station. 10. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is an area that extends to more than 90 sq km. It is in the rain shadow region of Western Ghats. The giant grizzled squirrel, tigers, gaur, spotted deer, kraits, turtles, vipers and many more species observe this sanctuary as their home. Chinnar receives only 48 days rain in a year during the months of October and November. This sanctuary is also an ideal for boating as well as trekking. Private vehicles and buses are available from Munnar to Chinnar at regular intervals.
11. Tea Plantations
Tea Plantations in Munnar is at the altitudes of 2200 meters above the sea level. The tea plantations are found growing in very favorable areas.
